Both scenarios will require you to grab every single trophy again. Because apparently those don’t transfer over with your save file. For those that painstakingly went through the game at launch and played for hours to get them, this will no doubt feel like a chore. And while I am personally still a few trophies away from the platinum, I had planned to come back and finish off the last few once the PS5 upgrade of Cyberpunk 2077 was released. Only to find out that won’t be possible. I’ll have to start from scratch. Which means a new save.

Cyberpunk 2077’s PS5 version won’t transfer trophies because it’s a different SKU

Based on CD Projekt’s support page for the game, previously acquired trophies from the PS4 version via backwards compatibility won’t transfer to PS5 because the upgraded game is a different SKU. Meaning it’s an entirely different install. I’m no expert on the way the trophy system works in this way. What I do know is that trophies have transferred for other games without issue. Final Fantasy XIV, Ghost Of Tsushima, and Final Fantasy VII Remake all transferred trophies following a PS5 upgrade. Which were also completely different game installs. So, in theory it should be possible here too. Yet it’s not. On one hand, this does wonders for the game’s replay value. Because what better way to interest those that have already played and beat the game to play it some more by reacquiring every trophy? Many of which are tied to quests that you can’t replay with a current save. On the other hand, I can’t imagine many players are going to want to start a brand-new game save just to go through the process of getting their trophies back. This also isn’t the only strange issue going on with the game’s upgrade for PlayStation users.

Some users are reporting an inability to install the next-gen update

While it’s unclear exactly how widespread this is, it seems that some international players are having problems with the install. As in they can’t upgrade to the PS5 version of the game. One user was able to complete the install but then their PS5 went into safe mode. The r/cyberpunkgame subreddit is filled with these sorts of posts. So at the very least, it doesn’t seem to be a small problem. As noted by Gene Park on Twitter, those having issues may have some recourse. But even then those potential resolutions may not actually solve anything. Basically, if you’re planning to upgrade, cross your fingers and hope for the best. Maybe that’s a bit dramatic, but not completely unwarranted. There is genuinely a lot of good stuff from today’s patch. So hopefully players get to dive in with zero issue.
