Raghavan said in the email that “we’ll use this time to review our headcount needs and align on a new set of prioritized staffing requests for the next three months”. It’s not all bad news, though, as those that have already received contracts from Google, will still be hired. But, Google is not offering any contract extensions right now.

Google joins many other tech giants pausing hiring

Over the last several weeks, we have heard of many tech giants pausing their hiring. Apple just announced they were pausing hiring yesterday and now Google today. You know the economy is going down the drain when the two companies that are literal ATMs decide to stop hiring new workers. Meta (formerly Facebook) also announced recently that it would slash hiring for engineering roles by 30% this year, over the current economic uncertainties. Twitter paused hiring back in May, and two execs left just weeks before Elon Musk was set to complete his acquisition – which is now not happening. Many economists and market watchers are worried that we are in a recession. So we’re starting to see these big companies tighten their belts a bit, and stop spending as much money. Over the last decade, spending money has worked out great for these companies, especially Google and Apple, which seem to be printing more and more money each quarter. Of course, a lot of this has to do with the pandemic – not only giving out tons of stimulus money, but also forcing companies to lay off employees for a year. And we’re just now starting to catch up.
