Google Fiber is targeting the new broadband internet services at “creative professionals, people working in the cloud or with large data, and households with large shared internet demands” (via). The 5 Gig service will let you upload and download at the same speed simultaneously, no matter the file size. You can quickly send and receive large files over the internet for efficient remote collaboration. With the 8 Gig service, you can expect even lower latency. Everything you are doing online will happen in near real-time. This will allow for seamless work on the cloud. The new fiber optic internet products from Google Fiber will be available for trial to existing Fiber customers in Utah, Kansas City, and West Des Moines “as early as next month”. You need to fill out this Google form to sign up for an opportunity to test 5 Gig and 8 Gig internet early. If you’re eligible for the trial, the company will reach out to you. It wants feedback from you about how you plan to use such superfast internet. A public rollout will begin next year.

Google Fiber expands its multi-gig broadband internet

Google Fiber launched its 1 Gig internet back in 2010. It currently costs $70 a month. A decade later, it expanded to 2 Gig and become one of the first ISPs (internet service providers) to offer a widely accessible multi-gig product. This plan is priced at $100 per month. While it is already fast enough for most people, including heavy gamers and streamers, Google Fiber continues to push the limit for “fast” internet. It is further expanding its multi-gig internet services with the launch of 5 Gig and 8 Gig products. “The future is fast, and it’s about to get faster,” Google Fiber says, adding that it is already testing 20,000 Megabits (20 Gig) in the field. It may still be quite far off from being a reality, but the future is surely fast.
