Google Meet started showing live translated captions last year. Following a brief beta period, the feature rolled out publicly in January this year. At launch, it supported real-time translations of English audio in French, German, Portuguese, and Spanish. The company is now adding support for these languages the other way around. Moreover, Meet can also now show live captions for anything that the speaker says in English in multiple new languages. On top of this, Google Meet now supports standard captions in Japanese, Russian, Italian, Korean, Dutch, Portuguese, and Mandarin (traditional). The company notes that it is still optimizing the performance of some languages. Those will be denoted by a “Beta” tag. It will continue to improve the performance of all supported languages while expanding Meet’s live translated captions to new languages in the coming months. Meanwhile, the latest expansion should be available to all eligible users by now. Google began the rollout a few days back and said all eligible Meet users in Rapid Release and Scheduled Release domains should get support for new languages by this week. You can check for it by navigating to the Captions section in Meet Settings, both on the mobile app as well as the web client. Live translation is available by default and has no admin control.

Google Meet can now translate more languages in real-time

As we meet virtually more than ever, live translated captions become essential. They remove the language barrier, allowing people to express themselves freely without worrying about whether the other person is getting their point. This feature makes meetings more inclusive and collaborative as participants can consume content in their preferred language. Google is now making its videoconferencing platform even more inclusive by adding live translation support for more languages. Live translated captions in Google Meet are available for meetings organized by users with a Google Workspace Business Standard, Business Plus, Enterprise Starter, Enterprise Standard, Enterprise Plus, Education Plus, or Teaching and Learning Upgrade edition. All participants in such meetings can access live translations. Standard captions, meanwhile, are available to everyone. All Google Workspace customers and legacy G Suite Basic and Business customers can access standard captions in Google Meet.
