The Google Tensor could be none other than the Exynos 9855
Back in October 2020, reports emerged that Samsung is working on two new flagship smartphone SoCs under the names or part numbers Exynos 9925 and Exynos 9855. The former is said to arrive as the successor to the Exynos 2100 (Exynos 9840), i.e. as the Exynos 2200 inside the Galaxy S22 series early next year. Details about the Exynos 9855 have been scarce so far. But, according to a Galaxy Club report, it’s nothing but the new Tensor chip that we will see inside Google’s upcoming flagships. The Dutch publication is supporting the claims with another piece of information: the Exynos 9855 has the codename Whitechapel. If you recall, that’s the same codename that has been associated with the Tensor chip in the past. Going by the part numbers, the Exynos 9855/Tensor sits between Exynos 2100 (Exynos 9840) and Exynos 2200 (Exynos 9925). It’s closer to the former than the latter. And you should expect a similar performance gap as well. The Tensor SoC that will power the Pixel 6 series may very well be inferior to the next-gen flagship Exynos or Snapdragon solutions in terms of raw performance. That shouldn’t be very surprising though. Although we don’t yet know the technical details like the CPU and GPU specs of the new processor, Google hasn’t particularly been vocal about its processing power. Instead, the company is seemingly focusing on artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities. We will find out how much of a performance gap Tensor will have with the Exynos 2200 and Snapdragon 895/898 once Google releases the Pixel 6 series.
Pixel 6 series will launch later this year
Putting an end to leaks, Google recently announced the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro. It also shared a few details about the devices. However, despite that official announcement, the new Pixels aren’t arriving on store shelves anytime soon. Reports indicated the devices will formally launch at the end of September. Hopefully, they will go on sale immediately after that. It’s still a few weeks of wait though. In the meantime, you can expect to hear more about the Pixel 6 series as the company prepares to bring the devices to the market.
