The company has long asked users to enable 2-step verification to boost account security. However, a majority of the users haven’t made the switch yet. With this in mind, Google is taking a more proactive approach to bolster the security of account owners. An extension of this feature will be to ask YouTube creators to enable 2-step verification on their accounts. It is now closing in on enabling the feature by default for a large bulk of its users. Google recently said it would spend $10 billion over a five-year period to ramp up cybersecurity. The company went on to say that it will improve open-source security protocols while also securing the software supply chain. The year 2021 has seen multiple instances of cyberattacks against major corporations. In August, a data breach exposed the personal information of 54 million T-Mobile consumers. Data including names, social security numbers, and addresses were reportedly accessed by this data breach. For its part, T-Mobile promised users 2 years of free access to McAfee ID Theft Protection. The carrier also announced new partnerships to improve the cybersecurity structure.
