But how exactly did Samsung do it? Well there are a few ways that this was accomplished. Let’s explore those ways.

Foldable components are now cheaper

This is probably the biggest reason why the Galaxy Z Flip 3 is now just $999. And that’s because the components that a foldable smartphone needs are cheaper. That includes things like the folding display. Since Samsung is one of the bigger suppliers of folding displays, and every company out there is making a foldable phone (even Google and Apple), Samsung is able to push out more displays. And that in-turn, makes them cheaper.  There’s also the dual-battery that these foldable phones use. That is now cheaper than it was.  Of course, we can’t forget about 5G. With the first round of foldables, they were also 5G phones which made them more expensive. As 5G components were very new. Now, we are in our third-round of 5G modems, and they are now cheaper and also more battery efficient.  Samsung did cut a few corners to get to this price though. That includes using the same cameras as the original Galaxy Z Flip. Yeah, that’s a bummer for a lot of people. But these cameras are much improved, and bring in a lot of the Galaxy S21 features too. But, using older parts (parts Samsung likely already had), helps lower the cost to build the Galaxy Z Flip 3 as well.

This was Samsung’s goal

Hitting this $999 price point was Samsung’s goal with the Galaxy Z Flip 3, as it opens it up to a bunch of customers that might not have looked at the Galaxy Z Flip 5G, because it was well over a grand. Now, it is in-line with the Galaxy S21+ and even the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra, at a price that people are starting to get used to paying for their phones.  So what does that mean for Samsung? More foldable sales. Samsung’s ultimate goal here is to corner the foldable market. Samsung wants to own this market. And getting – what is likely going to be their most popular foldable – down to regular phone prices, is a big way to do that.  Don’t be surprised if you see a lot more Galaxy Z Flip 3 smartphones out in the wild this year, compared to the previous Galaxy Z Flip or Flip 5G.
