All it takes is a little poking around the right menus and adjusting things as you see fit. That being said, ASUS does it make it pretty easy to put things on auto pilot and let the phone’s software handle this performance boost on the ROG Phone 6 for you. If you’re a brand-new owner of the ROG Phone 6 or ROG Phone 6 Pro, or you plan to get one, this guide is for you. We’ll break down the easy step by step process on making your device the best it can be for gaming. And best of all is that all you need is built right into the phone’s software. No need to download any extra apps. You will however want to make use of some hardware though. Luckily, ASUS provides this for you as well.

How to boost performance on the ROG Phone 6 and ROG Phone 6 Pro

Boosting performance of this device is easy and relatively quick. There may be a few things to do, but each one doesn’t take more than a minute or so to check off the list. With that said, let’s dive into how you can up this phone’s game for gaming.

Launch the Armoury Crate app

This is your central hub for basically everything you need to do. So we’ll start by pointing you in this direction. Launch the Armoury Crate app to configure everything you want before you start gaming.

After the app opens, tap the second button from the left in the navigation bar at the bottom of the screen. This will take you to the console tab.

Tap on the X Mode button and hit Edit/Apply

Once you’re on the console page, the different modes will be the first thing you see. Tap on the X Mode button and hit edit to customize the way X Mode performs based on your needs or wants. Inside the edit menu you can change all kinds of stuff setting the refresh rate to 144Hz. If you have this enabled, your screen will always stay at 144Hz while gaming. Though keep in mind that many games don’t actually support this refresh rate. So you won’t actually get the benefits for every game. Unchecking this means the refresh rate for the screen will stay at whatever you have set before you launch a game. So if that’s 60Hz, then it’ll stay at 60Hz. Or if you’re like me, you keep it at 165Hz all the time. In which case leave it unchecked and never worry about having to change it. This will drain your battery more though.

Turn of your ROG Vision display and system lighting

While they are cool effects, having your ROG Vision display (which sits on the back) and system lighting enabled means the phone’s CPU is diverting at least some of its power to keep those running. While the difference in performance if these are off might be minimal, minimal is better than no boost at all. That being said, it’s entirely worth trying your games with these two things on as well to see if you actually notice a difference personally. If you don’t leave them on.

Dim your display

We’re not talking about a lot here. But any amount that you feel is acceptable or to the least bright you’re willing to go. Having your display brightness up is going to contribute to increasing your phone’s internal temperature. And that will lead to potentially worse performance as the phone’s internals get warmer. The ROG Phone 6 has a decent cooling system that is much improved over the previous phone in the series. Still, if you don’t need your phone’s display brightness up as high as it’ll go, you can assist the cooling system by turning the brightness down. Making less work for it.

Attach the AeroActive Cooler 6

It might seem funny at first, but the AeroActive Cooler 6 is a super cool accessory that was designed and built specifically to help keep your phone cooler over longer gaming sessions. ASUS recommends it if you’re planning to play longer than an hour. Although I simply attach it right from the beginning most times anyway and if I don’t play more than 15 minutes I simply detach it. This accessory will have a direct impact on performance because the cooler your phone’s internals are, the better it can perform. For the most part, these are all the bigger things you can do to ensure a better performance for your device while play games. It’s also a good idea to make sure that notifications are turned off while you game so you aren’t interrupted. If getting notifications in the middle of games bothers you.
