The July SMR (Security Maintenance Release) for the Galaxy Note 20 series is rolling out with firmware version N98**XXS4FVG1. The update is available to all three models — Galaxy Note 20, Galaxy Note Ultra, and Galaxy Note 20 5G. Availability may vary by market and carrier variant, but it shouldn’t be long before Samsung covers all eligible units across the world. Samsung hasn’t yet published the details about the July SMR, though. As usual, it would contain fixes for dozens of vulnerabilities. But we don’t have precise information on the nature of these vulnerabilities, as well as their severity and affected devices. We are expecting the company to publish the latest security bulletin within this week. We will let you know when we have more information. The Galaxy Note 20 phones are unlikely to be picking up anything apart from the latest security patch with this update. But that’s not to say they will not receive feature updates anymore. Debuted with Android 10 on board in mid-2020, the phones have yet to complete two years in the market. They have received updates to Android 11 and Android 12 since launch and will also get Android 13 later this year or early 2023. The Galaxy Note 20 series doesn’t make the cut for Android 14, though. Nonetheless, if you’re using any of Samsung’s Galaxy Note 20 phones, the July security patch is on your way now. Since these updates roll out in batches, it could take a few days before everyone gets the new OTA (over the air) package. Watch out for a notification in the coming days. You can manually check for updates from the Software update section in the Settings app.
July update will reach more Galaxy devices in the coming days
Samsung started rolling out the July security patch to its devices last week. With the addition of the Galaxy Note 20 series, the company has already seeded the new SMR to almost a dozen different device models. These include the Galaxy S22 series, Galaxy S21 series, and a few low-cost models. More eligible devices, including Galaxy tablets, will join the party in the coming days. We will keep you posted.
