This redesign may be a minor one but surely not so insignificant. Earlier, the controls were overlaid on top of the video feed. As Android Police notes, that’s how Android’s default PiP works as well. The buttons would appear when you tap on the video, and they fade soon after. With the updated UI, the controls are always visible. This allows for easy reach whenever you need it. You can quickly play/pause the video, close it, or expand it to watch it in full-screen mode. No need to tap on the video feed for the buttons to appear first. The redesigned PiP UI on WhatsApp also ensures that the video feed always remains clean with no interference.

The updated WhatsApp PiP UI is now available in the beta channel

WhatsApp has long offered a picture-in-picture mode that lets you quickly open videos in a floating window while you continue with the conversation. It is a highly useful feature that often makes tasks easier and faster. There are some source limitations though. WhatsApp supports PiP only for videos from YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, ShareChat, and Streamable. You can also make video calls in PiP mode. Ironically, the app doesn’t support the feature for actual WhatsApp videos. Nonetheless, with the latest update, the feature now works even better. The latest change to the WhatsApp PiP UI is currently rolling out to users in the beta channel. WhatsApp beta version 2.21.22.3 brings the new UI. By the looks of it, this appears to be the only notable change the latest version of WhatsApp brings. You can expect this redesign to arrive in the stable version of the app in the coming weeks. But if you can’t wait for it any longer, you can enroll in the beta program here, provided there are slots available. Otherwise, you need to wait for the update to go live in the Google Play Store.
