The competition for making better and more practical foldable devices is reaching a whole new level. To date, companies like Microsoft and Samsung have changed the perception of foldable phones with the Surface Duo and Galaxy Z series. Now, Microsoft is planning to push the envelope and bring a new device with a reverse-foldable display. As per the latest patent application, spotted by “Walking Cat,” the new design allows for reverse-folding the display at 360-degrees. Then, you can use it in single-display mode. The main benefit of this design is that it doesn’t create an angled gap. Microsoft’s Surface Duo is currently using a similar design. You can reverse fold it at different postures and even use it in single-screen mode. However, when they’re folded, the gap between the two displays isn’t an enjoyable experience for those who want a single-screen without a bulky gap in between.
LG has developed a reverse-foldable display technology
In the patent application, Microsoft explains that its device can fold at a range of degrees, specifically from 0 to 360. “Examples are disclosed relating to foldable display devices and methods for folding a display device through a range of degrees at a folding portion.” However, providing a glass display that can fold from 0 to 360 degrees could be the main challenge in making such a device. But LG might help. At the SID 2022 Display Week summit, LG unveiled an 8.03-inch foldable OLED display that can fold from 0 to 360 degrees. This is the same thing that Microsoft needs. LG’s new screen technology uses UTG (Ultra-Thin Glass), and its resolution is 2480 x 2200 with 413 PPI. Moreover, it uses an anti-fingerprint material to give a neat look to the device. Technically speaking, it offers 430 nits of brightness and has a 109.9% DCI-P3 color gamut. LG also says its new display can withstand 200,000 folds. According to the latest rumors, Microsoft has no plans to release Surface Duo 3 this year. Instead, it prefers to release software updates for the original Surface Duo and Duo 2. Some sources also speculated that the company might change the design of its upcoming Surface Duo device. So maybe the next Surface Duo comes with a reverse-foldable display supplied by LG.
