Face unlock was, sadly, missing from the Pixel 6 series of phones. The story of face unlock on last year’s Pixel phones is a complicated one. The pro model was supposed to come with the capability, but Google nixed it right before launch. There was some printed promotional material that advertised the feature, and a person even saw it while setting up their Pixel 6 Pro.
However, the company will bring face unlock to the Pixel 7
TechDroider just hit us with a pretty big leak of the phones on Twitter. There were several pictures posted showing off some of the promotional material for the Pixel 7. There’s stuff that we already know. We know that it’s going to have a 2nd-gen Tensor chip. Also, we know what colors these phones are going to launch in. One of the promotional images shows off the face unlock feature. We don’t know if Google will use a dedicated sensor for the facial scanning. However, knowing Google, we can expect it to use AI for the heavy-lifting. What’s neat about this is that both Pixel 7 models are expected to receive face unlock when they launch. With the Pixel 6 phones, only the pro model was slated to get the feature. This time around, the less expensive phone won’t be left in the dust.
More specs for the phones were leaked
Along with the news about face unlock, the leak also revealed some more information on the phones. For starters, there will be no charging brick in the box this time, but that was to be expected. As for the camera package, the pro model will come with a 50MP main camera, 48MP telephoto camera, 12MP ultrawide camera, and a 10.8MP selfie camera. The regular model will have the same setup but without the telephoto camera. Also, the pro model will have macro focus. The Pixel 7 will have a 6.3-inch OLED display with a 1080p+ resolution that runs at 90Hz. The pro boosts the size to 6.7 inches and the resolution is 1440p+. As an added bonus, this phone’s display runs at 120Hz and will use LTPO technology. The Pixel 7 will have 8GB of RAM and 128GB/256GB of storage with no SD card expandability. The pro model will come with 12GB of RAM and have 128GB/256GB/512GB of storage. Aside from that information, we know that these phones will have IP68 water and dust resistance. The Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro are expected to cost $599 and $899, respectively. Google is going to announce these phones along with the Pixel Watch on October 6th at 10 am EST (7 am PST).
