The news of Samsung and Tesla’s collaboration has been circulating for years, but both companies were conservative about it. These days, the news is making the headlines again. Samsung Electro-Mechanics confirmed their negotiations with Tesla as a camera supplier. Of course, these conversations are not at an advanced level, and companies have just started with preliminaries. Samsung has revealed anything about the potential contract and its size. Samsung has previously detailed its roadmap for diversifying its camera lineup. The Korean manufacturer once said that it is working on “advancing and diversifying its camera modules.”
Samsung was reportedly the camera supplier to Tesla Cybertruck
Last year, Samsung unveiled its first camera sensor for cars, called ISOCELL Auto 4AC. In the same year, some sources reported that Samsung could be the potential camera supplier to Tesla Cybertruck, and the deal was worth $436 million. Earlier this year, the sources again reported that Samsung Electro-Mechanics could beat LG in supplying cameras to Tesla Cybertruck. However, Samsung later said it didn’t participate in the auction. The worth of a possible new contract between the two companies is still known. Also, the talks between companies are in the preliminary stage and may not end in signing a contract at all. If Samsung fails to close the deal with Tesla, other manufacturers like LG and maybe even Sony could be the next partners of the American EV manufacturer. According to Tesla CEO Elon Musk, Cybertruck will reach the production line in mid-2023. However, he later called this timeframe a bit “optimistic.” Supplying Tesla EVs with cameras is not the first partnership between Samsung and Tesla. The Korean manufacturer is currently providing Tesla with batteries. Also, Samsung is preparing to offer its 4680 cylinder batteries to Tesla. Closing the camera supplying deal helps Samsung to tighten its relationship with the greatest EV manufacturer in the world.
