Plenty of people buy Samsung’s Galaxy S devices when they launch. Starting at $799, Samsung’s 2022 S flagships are much more accessible than the foldable phones with a barrier to entry of $1,099.98. That’s just for the Flip 4; getting a Fold 4 will cost you nearly two grand. Also, the Galaxy S phone is more durable, and they have a more familiar form factor. This is why, with all of their popularity, the Galaxy Z foldable phones will always be behind the S phones in terms of sales.

However, Samsung believes the foldables could overtake the S phones in a few years

We say that foldable phones will never overtake S phones, but Samsung says “Challenge accepted”. In a new statement, Roh Tae-Moon, the head of Samsung Electronics (via Phone Arena) said that “by 2025, foldable items will take up more than 50 percent of Samsung‘s total premium smartphone [shipments]”. So, the company (or maybe just Roh Tae-Moon) believes that by 2025, more foldable phones will ship from the Korean company than S phones. That’s a bold claim, as foldable phones are still pretty niche compared to slab phones. If this actually does happen, then we can expect the Galaxy Z Flip phone of that year (it’d be the Galaxy Z Flip 7) to be shipped more than the Z Fold of that year. This is the case with phones nowadays; the Flip phones are more popular than the Fold phones. The only concern we have is just how expensive those phones will be that year. A year after launching cheaper foldable phones, Samsung raised the prices of its foldables. The Galaxy Z Flip 3 launched at $999 last year, but the Z Flip 4 launched at $100 more. The Z Fold 4 launched at the same price as the 256GB variant, but the 512GB variant says a small price hike. We’re not sure how the economy or the state of the chip shortage will be this year, so the potential prices of those phones are anyone’s guess. If Samsung’s right, then the mobile landscape could be completely different in the year 2025.
