This is good news because, while all phones throttle, this was a massive dip. It’s typical for phones to slow their performance when they get really hot. This is to keep them from overheating. However, Samsung basically took a sledgehammer to its phones’ performance.

Samsung REALLY impacted its phones’ performance

Users found out that Samsung was tanking their phones’ performance while in apps. The kicker is that this wasn’t because of heat. A couple of clever users were able to trick the phone into thinking their benchmark apps were games. The results from this will actually shock most users. One user ran Geekbench and got typical scores. Then, the user dug into the software, changed Geekbench’s name to Genshin Impact, and ran the test again. After doing so, the scores were as high as 50% lower. This means that the app preemptively throttled the app’s performance just because it thought it was a game.

Samsung released an update to let users control how their phones are throttled

Thanks to the backlash from the users and the negative press, Samsung responded. The company didn’t quite get rid of the throttling, but it did the next best thing. According to XDA Developers, Samsung released a new update that will let users control how their phone is throttled. This is a firmware update that includes a “Game Performance Manage Mode” in Game Booster. This mode should give users a bit more control over their devices’ performance under a heavy load. This will let players unlock the phones’ true potential while gaming. You’ll need to use this feature cautiously because there’ll be less of a safeguard keeping your phone from overheating. Nowadays, when a device gets too hot, it’ll automatically shut off. You don’t want that to happen during a gaming session. The update is only available for the Korean variants of the Galaxy S22 phones. The update should be coming to more markets in a few days.
