The Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 is still the most premium chipset from Qualcomm. As the company notes at Snapdragon Tech Summit this week, this new chipset has a long list of firsts. And it also builds on the power and performance of the Snapdragon 888+ 5G chipset.

What are the specs of the new Snapdragon 8 Gen 1?

The biggest news on the specs of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 is going to be the fact that it is a 4nm processor. That means it is smaller and uses less energy. Allowing smartphone makers to pack more battery or other things into your phone. Qualcomm states that there is an ARM Cortex-X2 core inside, along with three performance Kyro cores and four power-efficient Kyro cores. The company claims that these Kyro cores are now about 20% faster, while saving around 30% of its power. Making it more power efficient while also more powerful. Adreno has also been improved, and is now 30% faster, with 25% power savings. Qualcomm has also packed in its seventh-generation AI Engine, which is going to help with artificial intelligence on your smartphone. This also comes with a third-generation Sensing Hub, which is always-on and always-secure. Finally, AI Video Bokeh is available with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1.

When will we see this in new smartphones?

Qualcomm claims that we will see the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 launching in a smartphone before the end of 2021. Considering there’s no major worldwide flagships coming this year, we expect it to be from a Chinese manufacturer, potentially Xiaomi. But we also expect it to be used in the Samsung Galaxy S22 series that is set to debut early in 2022. So it won’t be long before we get this chipset in our hands to see just how fast it is.
