First aired in August 1997, South Park is now in its 24th season and still running strong. However, there’s been only one movie based on the series to date: Bigger, Longer and Uncut released in June 1999. More than two decades later, we are seemingly in for a bunch of them. Trey Parker and Matt Stone will reportedly make two new made-for-streaming original movies every year through 2027 for a total of 14 movies. So we should see the first two movies release on Paramount+ by the end of this year. “We did a South Park movie in 1999, and we’ve never done another one because the show has been so satisfying,” Stone said. “Now we’re older, and the idea of what streaming movies can be is pretty promising.” Additionally, as part of this $900 million deal, we will see six more seasons of South Park on Comedy Central. It is apparently cable’s longest-running scripted series, and has outlived every program on Comedy Central except for “The Daily Show.” “Matt and Trey are world-class creatives who brilliantly use their outrageous humor to skewer the absurdities of our culture and we are excited to expand and deepen our long relationship with them to help fuel Paramount+ and Comedy Central,” said Chris McCarthy, President/CEO, MTV Entertainment.

ViacomCBS doubles down on streaming efforts, plans 14movies for Paramount+

Paramount+ isn’t quite on par with the likes on Netflix and Disney+, both in terms of subscribers and content portfolio. But ViacomCBS has been making efforts to improve its streaming service recently. It recently rebranded the service and has added a few million new subscribers since. At the end of June, ViacomCBS reportedly had more than 42 million subscribers across its streaming services. This combines subscribers of Paramount+, BET+, and Showtime. It is now seemingly banking on the upcoming South Park spinoff movies on Paramount+ to give it a much-needed boost. Considering the popularity of the series, Matt and Trey have some big expectations to live up to. And by extension, Paramount+ too. They reportedly plan to expand the existing world of South Park with new concepts and characters. Time will tell if they would succeed in what they are set out to do.
