This shouldn’t come as much of a surprise; TikTok is kind of a popular app. It really popularized the vertical scrolling video platform. Even large companies like YouTube, Instagram, and Snapchat buckled and introduced their own vertical scrolling video feeds. Whether you like TikTok culture or you absolutely hate it, more people have smashed the Install button on that app than other apps this year.

TikTok was the most downloaded app in 2022 but by how much?

Plainly put, a fair amount. TikTok passed a significant milestone this quarter: 3.5 billion downloads over its lifetime. To put that into perspective, that’s like if every person in the US were to download the same app roughly 1,060 times. It managed to gain around 180 million downloads in 2022 alone. It managed to beat Instagram which came in second place. That was able to pull in around 160 million additional downloads. The next social media platform is Facebook in third place, and the next social media platform is Snapchat which is in 7th place.

What are the other apps on the list?

TikTok sits at the top, and the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th place spots belong to Meta’s Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp. Next, Telegram has the 5th spot and Shoppe follows it in 6th. The following apps didn’t break 100 million downloads this year. 7th is Snapchat, and that’s followed closely by Facebook Messenger in 8th. Next, we have CapCut in 9th and Spotify in 10th. These were all able to make it past 75 million downloads. Zoom sits in 11th place with WhatApp Business extremely close in 12th place. 13th is Meesho and Netflix is in 14th place sitting right on the 50 million line along with YouTube in 15th place.
