One of the things that some notable Twitter users have been dealing with was the third-party websites that embed their tweets as quotes. Even after the person decided to remove his tweet, its text was still visible on the embeds on that website. However, this is chaging. Now, Twitter uses javascript to remove the deleted tweets from outside websites and show a blank white box instead of the text. Celebrities and public figures will definitely like the feature as it cleans all footprints. However, they should pray that no one takes a screenshot of their tweet. One of the prominent examples of this is Donald Trump’s account. After the presidential election controversy, Twitter decided to suspend Trump’s account. Although there are currently no tweets on Trump’s Twitter account, you can still see Trump’s tweets on third-party news websites. Now, only a blank white page is shown instead of Trump’s tweets.
Twitter doesn’t want third-party websites to see the deleted tweets
This could be a great privacy-driven feature as it doesn’t allow anyone to see the deleted tweets from a user. However, those with a bit of technical knowledge can still see the deleted tweets by disabling javascript in the browser. But not all users have enough technical knowledge to do that. According to Twitter product manager Eleanor Harding, they added the feature “to better respect when people have chosen to delete their Tweets.” Twitter has previously insisted on being a “public record”. Even the company’s former CEO, Jack Dorsey, has said the reason for not adding an edit button is that it might damage Twitter’s reputation as a public record. Dates back to 2011, and when embedding tweets was first announced, Twitter engineer Ben Ward said that “If it’s deleted, or 1000 years in the future, the text remains”. However, it seems that the company has changed its mind about being a public record.
