As of this writing, the new SMR (security maintenance release) is only available to the unlocked versions of the two phones. But it shouldn’t be long before Samsung releases the update to the carrier-locked Galaxy Note 20 units as well. International versions of the phones also have yet to receive the latest security patch. The new update for the unlocked Galaxy Note 20 and Galaxy Note 20 Ultra phones in the US comes with firmware version N98xU1UES2DUK2. The OTA (over the air) release also already hit units on most wireless carriers, SamMobile reports. Galaxy Note 20 users on AT&T, Bluegrass Cellular, Comcast, C-Spire, Verizon, and Xfinity Mobile should now be able to download the new patch. The rollout should also soon reach units on the remaining few networks if it hasn’t already. As said earlier, this is only a security update and doesn’t bring any new features or user-facing changes. There are plenty of those coming with the One UI 4.0 update in a few weeks. Samsung is currently beta testing the new software for the Galaxy Note 20 series. We are expecting the stable update to arrive early next year, or maybe by the end of this year. We will keep you updated. Meanwhile, if you’re using the unlocked variant of either Galaxy Note 20 or Note 20 Ultra in the US, you can check for the latest update by navigating to Settings > Software update on your phone and tapping on Download and install. The December SMR contains fixes for several dozen vulnerabilities from both Google and Samsung.
Samsung has also released the December update to other Galaxy phones
Along with the Galaxy Note 20 series, Samsung has also released the December security update to a bunch of other Galaxy smartphones recently. These include the Galaxy A50, Galaxy Z Fold 2, and Galaxy S20 series. Of course, these updates aren’t currently available across the world. But if you’re using any of these Samsung phones, you can now expect to receive the new update soon. You should get a notification about the update once it becomes available for your phone. You can also manually check for updates from the Settings app on your phone.
