Google originally revealed plans of making a wired doorbell in September of last year. It gave the product a 2022 launch date, with the company promising support for a 24/7 continuous video history. The battery-powered model only offers event-based recording. We have since heard about the product a few times in leaks and certifications. There were speculations that Google would unveil the doorbell at its fall hardware event on Thursday, October 6. This is after it said to “announce additions to the Nest smart home portfolio” at the event. However, days before the event, the new wired Nest Doorbell leaked in real-life photos. A reader sent the photos to 9to5Google. They said they found the product out on the floor at a Best Buy store on Monday. They could see the doorbell in white and dark gray colors, though there may be more color options. Since it was an unreleased product, the store’s system wouldn’t allow its purchase. However, the store manager told them that the doorbell will be available to purchase from October 4 at $179.99, identical pricing to the battery model. While the pricing is reasonable, it’s surprising that Google is quietly releasing the doorbell a couple of days before the big event. Perhaps it could be an error in Best Buy’s system or a mistake on the store manager’s part. We shall find out soon.

The new wired Nest Doorbell would look a little different

The upcoming wired Nest Doorbell may cost similarly to the battery model, but there will be a few notable differences between the two. Both in terms of appearance and functionality. The packaging is largely unchanged but the box now notes “2nd Generation” and “Wired” with a check mark. The original model only mentioned “Battery,” which is now unmarked. Inside the box, we have a shorter but thicker doorbell, though the overall structure is the same. And in terms of functionality, we already mentioned that Google is offering continuous surveillance. There isn’t much hope for video quality improvements, though. Whether or not Best Buy starts selling the new wired Nest Doorbell this Tuesday remains to be seen. Either way, Google might have something to tell about the product during its even later this week. We will keep you posted.
