Xiaomi may debut a 200MP camera on its next ‘Ultra’ phone

This actually goes hand-in-hand with the rumor that surfaced earlier this year. That rumor said that the company is working on a smartphone with a 200MP camera. Some of us hoped that it may arrive this year, but that won’t be the case, it seems. So, when will the device arrive? Well, the Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra (featured image above) launched back in April this year, along with its siblings. The Xiaomi 12 series will likely arrive around the same time in 2022. So, we can expect those phones in early Q2 2022. The tipster alleges that Xiaomi plans to announce three Xiaomi 12 models as part of the series. That seems to be about right. In addition to that, he said that the ‘Ultra’ variant will include a 200MP camera on the back. If Xiaomi manages to pull this off, it will have a smartphone with the largest camera. Both Xiaomi and Samsung are currently leading the race in that regard, as both companies have phones with 108MP camera sensors.

Other Xiaomi 12 devices are said to offer compelling camera features as well

Anyhow, the tipster also noted that other Xiaomi 12 devices will likely get “high quality 5x periscope ultra-telephoto, and high-quality ultrawide angle” cameras. Now, if Xiaomi ends up including a 200MP camera on the Xiaomi 12 Ultra, we’ll likely be able to capture 200MP images. That sounds crazy, but there you go. The thing is, those images probably won’t look great out of the box. The same goes for images taken with 108MP camera sensors that stay in that format. Xiaomi will likely use pixel binning in order to provide the best photo possible. In other words, those 200MP shots will be binned down to 16MP. That way, you’ll get photos with a manageable size, and they’ll look better than 200MP ones. That’s a technique smartphone OEMs have been using for a while now, for larger camera sensors.
